BORAX

Borax is my new best friend. I bought some this summer to make homemade floam (which turned out AWESOME). Well, we have a little bug problem, a.k.a. cocroaches and ants, but never fear...Borax is here! I heard about some homemade ant and roach killer and I thought I would try it out. Why not? I had a box of Borax laying around just waiting to get used. I just mixed Borax and Sugar together and sprinkled it around in some key locations. It worked awesome! It got rid of my ant problem in 2 days! I haven't seen ants in my house since. It kills the cockroaches that find it (because I have watched them die) but since I didn't sprinkle it thoroughly around and throughout my house I am still having a bit of a cockroach problem. This afternoon while trying to put the boys to sleep I found a cockroach crawling across their bedroom floor! EEK!! If you know me, you know that such a find was the last straw for me. Tonight the boys and I made a little trip to Lowe's a bought a very large bottle of Ortho Home Defense Max, and I plan on using a LOT of it ALL OVER. I do not tolerate bugs in the house and definitely not in the bedroom. I should have exercised some self control and just spread more of my borax mixture around, but my phobia got the best of me...and I really needed a trip out of the house. But I digress.
I also made some homemade laundry soap. So far it seems to be working great and it couldn't have been easier. I 9x the recipe and it still only took me about 20 minutes and didn't hardly cost a thing. Mine was a little more money because I added Oxi Clean to it, but I like using Oxi Clean (I buy it anyways) and since I was saving so much money on my laundry soap I had no guilt buying some to add in. Now everything is all together in one scoop. Fantastic!
I have also been up to a few other things. I found a solution of what to do with all of Justin's hats:
I have also been working on some FHE lessons that I am quite excited about. They are taken from the Ensign. If anyone is curious I will post more but it has been a very long day and I just don't feel like going into detail at the moment.
I also made a cleaning schedule for myself that has been working great lately. I tend to get overwhelmed with the monotony of having to clean my house every day. (With 2 small kids, it gets dirty EVERY DAY). So this helps me conceptualize what I need to get done and feel good about the things I have done without worrying about what I have not. I have a Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Occasional checklist. I have mastered my daily list: dishes, sweep, my bedroom, pick up toys; it has helped tremendously. I don't feel like I have to do everything and so I actually do something, and my house stays liveably clean. I am still working on fitting in the other things but they are slowly finding their way into my schedule. I love checking things off my list!
And now it is time for some well earned ice cream. If only I had a checklist for motherhood......

Justin

Just a few moments with Justin today that I would like to remember:

  • Today while I was making lunch (cantelope and chocolate chip pancakes), Justin was changing the boys out of their church clothes. Koyle was screaming and carrying on as he usually does. The kid hates to get his clothes or diapers changed. I overheard the following conversation between Justin and Koyle:
J: Koyle, get over it. You have to get dressed every day of your life.
K: still crying
J: Seriously, you have to get dressed every day. Except for your honeymoon. Then you can stay naked all day if you want. But other than that you have to get dressed
K: still crying

Awesome honey! Good thing he doesn't understand yet. But seriously, I love the way Justin talks to the boys. He is always so matter of fact and honesty. It always makes me smile.

  • Then at lunch we were happily eating our pancakes with peanut butter and chocolate chips when Justin had this conversation with Matthew
J: Matthew, when is your mother...
M: Are you talking to me?
J: Yes, I am
M: Why?
J: Because I am sabotaging your mother. So Matthew, when is your mother going to learn that some things are just better without chocolate chips in them?

This is when I entered the conversation:
C: Seriously? They are chocolate chip pancakes. You are the only person I know who complains about their wife making them eat chocolate chip pancakes.
J: I'm just saying, I like my food plain.
C: They are chocolate chip pancakes!
J: I just always tell you to make some without chocolate in them for me. You finally learned to do that with your zucchini bread.....

I will end the dialog there. Yet another reason why I love Justin. He can always make me laugh. And yes folks, he was being serious. He really prefers plain food and doesn't appreciate chocolate as much as I do. Makes my job as cook pretty easy.

Baby K

It's time for a good update of Koyle, even though I will get to do another one for his birthday in a few weeks. It is a little scary that he is going to be 1 in just a month! He is still just my little baby. But he has really taken off and started growing up on me the past week or two. So I'll save all the boring stats for his birthday post : ) and just entertain you with some pictures and video.

Koyle LOVES his little dog that came with his blanket (compliments of Troy & Sarah-best Christmas gift ever!). I don't know if he likes it because it is the same material as his blanket, or just because he loves it, but either way he gets the biggest grin and will give the dog lots of loves and hugs-so cute!

Koyle LOVES the pen bucket. I may have mentioned this before. It never gets old for him. Sometimes he will try putting the pens back in but he never makes it very far because it is just too exciting to pull them out.

Love this picture. He is so cute in those overalls and green shirt, and that is a classic Koyle look on his face.

Koyle still loves the piano, but I get tired of holding him in front of it all the time. So one day I just stuck him in his high chair in front of the keyboard. Baby heaven! Matthew loves dancing to the music and Koyle can get some pretty sweet beats going. He has found more settings on the keyboard then I even knew existed.

Just because he's cute! And I think this picture makes him look grown up.

Koyle has really discovered books and LOVES the reading corner. He will often wander off here on his own. He doesn't love me actually reading books to him very much, so we are working on it. He has started pointing at things with his little finger and it is adorable. So I can keep him focused for a minute by pointing at things on the page. He also enjoys pointing to the people in the pictures on our wall.

And of course he is a huge help in unloading the dishwasher! (I may have been heard to say that dishwashers weren't that big of a deal and I could go without and it would be fine...what was I thinking? Dishwashers are a great thing!)

I really wanted to get Koyle a little pool for his birthday because all he ever wants to do is splash his hands and feet in the bathroom sink. He will sit at the bathroom counter and cry and whine until I pick him up and let him play; or he throws a fit when I don't let him. Anyways, I knew if we waited until September it would be too cold to swim, so we bought a hose and pool now and called it his birthday present. We figured he has enough presents from Grandma waiting to be opened that he will be just fine on his birthday. The weather has been pretty cool the past couple of weeks so we haven't gotten to use it as much as I hoped, but I don't think the summer is really over yet. And when we are done swimming, we dump the water out on the front lawn and call it watering the grass. Thanks to that and the rain our yard is actually starting to turn green again!

This picture is for Grandma Tanya. Koyle likes to pretend like his is riding a roller coaster! Ever since he was little he will throw both arms up in the air and smile when he gets happy or excited.
Another pen bucket picture, but I liked it so it got included. Koyle is getting pretty good at holding his balance. He loves to try and stand up on his own, or let go of things and see how much he can move before he falls down. He also enjoys walking around holding onto our hands.

This picture doesn't do his head justice. I should have taken one last night when all the bruises and black eye have turned black and purple instead of just red and swollen. Koyle tends to get his arms tangled up under himself when he crawls a lot, leading to many smashed faces into the tile. He has a couple of really good bruises on his forehead right now. And then he pulled the computer stand onto himself the other day and it landed right on his eye. It is all swollen and has gone through every color of the rainbow. Right now it is that nasty greenish yellow color. Poor little boy-he looks like he has been through a war.

I had gotten a really awesome video of Koyle playing with the piggy bank-but it wasn't working! So if I can figure it out I will post it later. Koyle has really been keeping me on my toes lately. I am constantly trying to find new things to challenge him and pique his curiosity. He can also throw a mean tantrum when he wants to. He wants to be just like Matthew and do what Matthew does, but he just isn't quite old enough and that really frustrates him at times. Some days I want him to hurry and grow up and other days I just want him to snuggle with me on the couch and be my Baby K forever!

Some thoughts about life in Lubbock

Well, it has been 4 weeks now that we've been in Lubbock. Time is flying because I do not feel like we've been here that long but at the same time it does. Our transition has been pretty smooth. I feel very comfortable here and already have no problem drying somewhere by myself (with my GPS of course), walking the kids around, or going to the park. It seems like a pretty safe place and a lot like Boise, just as I suspected it would. They did a talent show during orientation week and one guy told some jokes about Lubbock. One was..."Why do the ducks fly upside down over Lubbock? Because there's nothing worth pooping on!" It hasn't taken long to see the truth and humor in that joke. It is just a little ugly here, which I know is mostly due to the season and the drought. A couple of times our adventures have taken us into some nicer neighborhoods and it is like therapy for the eyes to actually see green lawns, flowers, shrubs, etc. And it is a little weird to not have any mountains in the horizon. Even in Virginia I lived among the hills. But, to make up for that we have been having thunder and lightning storms almost every day for a week. I LOVE thunder and so that has been really fun.
Still no callings at church or visiting teachers or anything. I am definitely feeling the lack of purpose in my life. Some days are really good. I take joy in raising my children and keeping my home in order...and other days the monotony of caring for kids and cleaning the house sets in while my husband is off having awesome adventures and learning so many things. With Matthew potty training right now it is hard to go places which just adds to such emotions since being cooped up in the house for days on end never does much to help a person. I knew that this would be the hard part of moving for me. I don't like starting over and having to rediscover my niche.
However, we have already made some good friends. Everyone is really nice and welcoming here. I do tend to gravitate towards the two other wives who are also 1st years. I think because a) I really like them and b) because I don't feel like the new girl, or the one who doesn't know anything when I am with them. The other people already know each other, and everyone's kids, and the ins and outs of life here and what is going on. Not that that is a bad thing, it just takes longer to make friends with people who are already established and have friends whereas those of us that are new just rely on each other more. But people have seriously been so including. There was a baby shower this weekend and they were sure to make sure we were invited and included. As far as I can tell so far the medical student families all tend to hang out with each other.
Not loving the cockroaches, but I seem to have gotten rid of the ants. Well, Matthew is whining and rubbing his head all over me like a cat. So I guess it is time to go play with the child. Stay tuned in the coming days for some cute updates of Koyle and Matthew.

After a dinner meal last week in which Koyle quite nearly consumed all the food I had to offer him, I decided it would be fun to keep a food journal for a week to track how much, and what Koyle ate. I decided to do it for Matthew as well while I was at it. So if you ever wanted to know what we eat every day (or at least my kids)...here it goes:

6:00 nacho toppings with a couple chips, zucchini bread
7:00 milk

So there it is. And that is just my two kids, add two adults onto that and it is no wonder my meager food budget just isn't cutting the mustard these days. Not to mention that food is really expensive here in Texas. I paid $3.88 for a gallon of milk the other day! I am really missing WinCo right about now.

Potty Training= Success

As promised, Matthew started wearing big boy underwear yesterday, on his birthday. Let me just tell you he is doing fabulous! People have told me that with boys you just have to wait until they are ready, and if you do then it will be easy. Matthew has finally decided he is ready, which is a good thing because I wasn't sure how ready I was to tackle the nightmare of potty training again. But so far, after 1 1/2 days, it has been a dream rather than a nightmare. He gets so excited to wear his undies and he loves sitting on the potty, getting train stickers, and best of all, chocolate chips. We had 3 accidents yesterday, all before noon, but we had 11 successes! Yes, he went to the bathroom 11 times yesterday (and that is not counting the 3 accidents). He is filling up his train poster a littler faster than anticipated and I'm not sure what I'm going to do when he reaches the top. I guess I need to get his prize ordered soon. Today he even pooped on the potty, of his own accord. I keep thinking this must be too good to be true and that he will start digressing after a few days, the way he did last time. But I think that this is here to stay.
So we just need to keep practicing for a few days before I trust taking him out places. And we need to work on staying dry while sleeping. Matthew HAS to have water with him when he goes to bed and I'm not sure how we are going to stop that habit, but we need to if he is going to go dry through the night. Life is good.
This is Matthew's train chart. The numbers are not in order because he is having fun picking out which car to put on the train each time. I added some stars to the track and when he makes it to a star he gets a special surprise. The first time I let him do shaving cream and he was in heaven. Now that is all he wants to do for his special surprise which is fine by me because it is easy!

One of my favorite moments yesterday was when Matthew started singing, "Go me, go me, go me, I peein on the potty. Go me!" So adorable.  I also smile every time he yells, "I feel the pee comin" and takes off running to the bathroom. We have a lot of false alarms, but that is okay : ) He has also taken a special liking to the extra bathroom, I think because that is where he went potty for the first time because Koyle was asleep in the boys room. Now that is the only potty he wants to use. Last night he was in the bathtub in his room, and he ran out and used the other bathroom. Silly boy! Looks I really will have 3 bathrooms to keep clean.

A Train Birthday

The much anticipated birthday #3 arrived this weekend. We had Matthew's party on Sunday and actually ended up having a good group of friends over. We found a little boy Matthew's age that lives near by and they had a blast together. We of course made a train cake and it actually turned out really cute; I completed the magic with a roundhouse. My favorite was the hopper car full of gold sprinkles. It really looked like it was carrying a load of gold. I didn't get any pictures of his presents but we got him a new motorized engine that pulls his cars around the track. He LOVES it. That is all he plays with and he's only had it for 2 days and we are already on battery #3 because that poor train is running nearly nonstop. (I'm hoping the fun slows down a little or it is going to end up being a quite expensive present with all the batteries.) He also got a swim noodle for the pool, a couple of new books, and a new piggy bank (it was one Justin got on his mission). Our friends bought him a Thomas movie and got him a couple of shirts-so nice of them!! He also got a baseball tee and some new shoes from Grammy Tami which he opened before we left Idaho. Grandma Tanya got him a cool buzz lightyear with a rocket that he found during the move and just couldn't wait to open. His friend Oliver even mailed him a cool car that arrived on his birthday. So he had a pretty smokin' awesome birthday.
On Monday, his actuall birthday, he enjoyed all the phone calls from his family. We also started POTTY TRAINING!! He had been so excited and told everybody he met that when he turned 3 he would be potty training. Kind of a funny way to celebrate a birthday, but he loved getting to wear his undies.

The First Week

We got to our apartment Sunday night at 9 and Justin's cousins who are here for the summer met us there as well as the friend who had picked up our key for us. His wife had made us dinner and gave us ice cream bars, and cereal and milk for breakfast. What a saint!! I had been so anxious to see our apartment for the first time to finally know what I would be living in for the next 6 months and I was definitely disappointed. The apartment just wasn't what we had been hoping for; the layout was different than we had expected and there was no living space. But the real kicker was that it smelt horribly of smoke. We knew right away that we didn't want to stay there. But we put on our happy face until company left and then started talking through our options.
Monday morning we went and talked to the office and that nasty smoke turned out to be a blessing. They let us just walk away from the lease, gave us our rent money back, and half of our deposit back. However, we now needed a place to live. So we loaded the kids back up, which they were not happy about, and started looking for an apartment. We came to the Lynwood townhouses and I immediately loved it. Sometimes I think that perhaps we should have kept looking and found something that was cheaper and smaller, but the deed is done now and there is no going back. Spontaneous big decisions stress me out but so far we are loving it here. They had a unit we could get into that afternoon and so after signing the lease we headed back over to the old apartment to gather our things and turn our keys back in over there. Matthew was pretty sad to leave because he happened to really like the old apartment. They had a window opening on the stairs that he really took a liking to and he often asks to go back to our old house in Texas. We stopped by there to check our mail yesterday and Matthew got so excited. Silly boy, we were only there for 12 hours and he got attached.
It worked out nicely because we hadn't unloaded the truck yet and we just had the people who were arranged to come help meet us at our new apartment. So at 2 o'clock on Monday we unloaded the truck and started sorting through the boxes to find some of the essential things. It took us a few days to find everything.
By Tuesday afternoon we finally found the shower curtain, only to discover there were no shower rods. I had the bright idea to just try showering without a shower curtain...it was really not a good idea. We ended up just splashing ourselves from the faucet. We didn't want to take a bath because I hadn't cleaned the tub yet and the apartment was pretty dirty. But it was day 3 and we were desperate to get clean before going out. So after sprucing up a bit we headed off to get some much needed things for the house.
Wednesday was the first day of orientation and spouses were invited. Lindy watched the boys for us so I could go with Justin. The first part was just a basic welcome and they gave us some information. Then I headed to the Medical Alliance group which is basically spouses of med school students. Justin got his stuff done really fast during that time so he ended up coming to the meeting with me. It was a very interesting meeting. I don't think it was their goal to scare everybody but we all walked away wondering if we were really ready for the next 4 years. They had people talk about their experience during each year and the girl who was doing 2nd year totally broke down in tears talking about how hard it had been. At least they were honest. But I met my new friend Brittany there so the meeting did turn out to be a good thing. Justin knew her husband Brad from BYU and we just became instant friends. We have seen them a lot already and even had them over last night for ice cream! Anyways, after the orientation stuff we went and picked up Lindy and the boys and went to the Community Fair thing. There were a bunch of booths set up from businesses and school clubs and we got a bunch of pamphlets and free stuff, etc. Then we dropped the kids back off at home and I got to go with Justin to see the simulation center where he will be doing a lot of his learning. It was really neat and they have some pretty awesome technology. I was so glad I got to see where he will be spending all of his days and to meet some the of the people he will be working with.
Thursday Lindy and I worked on unpacking more while Justin was at orientation. That night we went out to get ice cream, well frozen custard actually. We discovered this place from the business fair and it is so delicious. Already one of my favorite places here.
Friday Lindy and I took the boys to the Science Expo in the morning. It was a lot of fun. There was a children's museum that the boys loved. They even had a whole section just for crawling babies. They had little houses to crawl into that had mirrors or videos of animals playing. Koyle was a little leery of the tunnels but he enjoyed the rest of it.Then we picked Justin up and headed to the White Coat Ceremony. I thought I was excited for it, but really it was basically a really slow graduation. They read the name, walked across the stage and put the coat on, got a book and then walked off the stage. Koyle was not wanting to be there especially since it was nap time. But we survived and then they had food afterwards. We were going to go out on the town Friday night but it has been a long day and we were all pretty tired. So we just drove to the temple and walked around it, and called it good.
Saturday we had to take Lindy to the airport. We were sad to see her go. Not only was she a huge help and we are so grateful for her, but it was just fun spending time with her. I wish her trip could have been a little more exciting but moving is what it is, and Lubbock just isn't that exciting. That night the school had a scrubs party. We only stayed for a little bit, but Justin got some free scrubs out of it!
Sunday we went to church. It was our little secret that Matthew threw up Saturday night, but we really wanted to go to our first week of church and Matthew was excited to see the new nursery. He seemed fine so we just told him not to tell anybody that he was sick : ) Koyle kept "spitting up" and were just like, oh he does this all the time. Anyways, the ward seems very nice. There are a lot of young students and I look forward to meeting new people. We had combined Priesthood/Relief Society so I didn't really meet anybody but plenty of people came up and introduced themselves to us.
Monday was my first day home alone in quite a while. We did just fine. The kids are loving the space and having all of their things back. We have especially enjoyed our books and blocks. Koyle is just exploring everywhere. Monday evening after running a few errands we went to the TTUHSC SOM (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine...that is a mouthful) talent show. Matthew loved it, Koyle was cranky and tired.
Today is Tuesday. Justin is doing an early clinical experience for school right now and then we have our last night of freedom. Classes start tomorrow. I guess we will see if things are really as bad as people say they are. I am not worried. We're going to be just fine. We are getting settled in and while there is still a lot to do we are in a good place and ready for this next adventure to begin.

The Road Trip

We started our crazy adventure on Thursday evening. We didn't get out of Boise until about 6:30, an hour later than planned, but that was to be expected. Matthew stayed in Meridian with Grammy Tami and Justin, Lindy, Koyle and I headed off in the good old civic. (Might I add that this was after replacing the clutch and brake pads, buying a new battery because it unexpectedly died on me earlier that week, and fixing the air conditioning fan that sounded like it was going to explode.) We stopped in Rupert to feed Koyle and bid farewell to Grandma and Grandpa. We didn't get to Rexburg until a little after 11:30. The drive wasn't too bad because Koyle slept half the time but we were definitely ready for bed.
Friday morning we went to the school and got one last hair cut and stocked up on shampoo. Then it was off to the luncheon and sealing of our dear friends Jeff & Sarah. They were so cute and it was fun to spend one more afternoon with all of our friends. After the wedding we headed  to Pocatello to have dinner with Jacque. She ended up getting stuck at work and was able to get away just in time to give hugs and say goodbyes.Koyle got to have his first Happy Meal! I felt a little funny buying a Happy Meal for my 10 month old, but the kid had to eat and I was not prepared enough to have a cooler full of bite size fruits and veggies for him in the car. He enjoyed the chicken nuggets.
Saying my goodbye to Idaho. Lindy and I wanted to stop and get pictures at every state sign. When we got Utah's we wanted one of Idaho since we had started in Idaho, so we had to dart across the interstate to get Idaho's sign...a good way to get the blood pumping after sitting in the car.
Then we continued on to Salt Lake. We got to Cory & Tiffany's house around 11. Koyle was already not loving all the travel, but he wasn't too bad because he had Lindy in the back to play with. Matthew and Jay met us in Salt Lake with the moving truck. We got there just in time to watch them light the Olympic Torch. We were all a little sad we had to miss the opening ceremonies.
Saturday morning we were up and out the door by 8. Matthew loved riding in the big truck so much that he ended up riding there the whole trip. Good old Floyd hit 200,000 miles just as we were getting to Provo. We are hoping to get another 200,000 out of him. (You might think we are joking, but we are not.) Justin and Jay got the easy kid. We made it to Moab about 12:30, just as Koyle was reaching his breaking point. We walked around and had some lunch. Then we drove to Four Corners, again getting there just as Koyle was losing it.  After that it was just a few hours to the hotel. We took the kids swimming, ate some dinner, and called it a day.

Notice the sad face. Matthew was super awesome whenever he was riding in the truck, and super whiny whenever we were out of the truck.
Matthew's favorite part of the Four Corners was the mountains and he really wanted a picture with them. This was the not so beautiful scenery we got to enjoy all through New Mexico. But don't worry, Lindy came prepared with scenery for just such an occasion:

This is why I love Lindy, she is always coming up with awesome things like that. This was the real scenery we got to enjoy the whole way!

Arizona had the lamest sign. The first one we saw was even lamer than this one, but we found this when we were taking our New Mexico sign.New Mexico LOVES their billboards!

Sunday after our continental breakfast we loaded back up for our final day of driving. We got to Albuquerque, NM around noon and Justin ran Jay to the airport while the rest of us ate lunch at McDonalds. Then we loaded up for the final stretch to Lubbock. Koyle was so done by this point and Lindy was such a trooper to help with him. We got to Lubbock about 9 p.m. and it was time to be done in the car.
We survived and while we had a good time I am having to talk myself into the idea of doing it all over again at Christmas time-only twice right in a row to go there and back again. Maybe I will look into taking the train!
